Maintenance Schedule

Regular maintenance ensures performance and safety.

IntervalTask
Before each useCheck tire pressure, engine oil level, fuel level, and for loose parts.
Every 8 hoursCheck deck belts for wear; clean deck underside.
Every 25 hoursChange engine oil (first 5 hours), check battery terminals, grease fittings.
Every 50 hoursReplace air filter; check spark plug; sharpen blades.
Every 100 hoursChange oil filter; check transmission fluid.

Engine Care

Proper engine maintenance is critical.

  1. Oil Change: Run engine to warm oil. Drain via drain plug into pan. Refill with 2 quarts of SAE 30 or 10W-30.
  2. Air Filter: Replace paper element every 50 hours; clean foam pre-filter if equipped.
  3. Spark Plug: Gap at 0.030 inches; replace annually or every 100 hours.
  4. Fuel System: Use fuel stabilizer if storing over 30 days. Replace fuel filter annually.
  5. Cooling: Keep cooling fins and engine shrouds clean of debris.

Tip: Always disconnect spark plug wire before performing any engine maintenance.

Deck Adjustment & Blade Care

For an even cut, deck must be level.

  1. Park on level surface; set cutting height to middle position.
  2. Measure blade tip height from ground at all four corners of deck.
  3. Adjust deck hanger rods to level (front-to-back and side-to-side within 1/4 inch).
  4. Blade Sharpening: Disconnect spark plug. Remove blade bolt (left-hand thread). Sharpen at original angle (balance blade after sharpening). Torque blade bolt to 45-55 ft-lbs.
  5. Belt Inspection: Check deck drive belt for cracks or fraying. Replace if worn.

WARNING! Wear heavy gloves when handling blades. Ensure blade is properly balanced to prevent vibration.

Storage & Winterization

Prepare mower for extended storage (over 30 days).

  1. Clean entire mower, especially underside of deck.
  2. Change engine oil and filter.
  3. Add fuel stabilizer to tank; run engine 5 minutes to circulate.
  4. Disconnect battery negative cable; store battery in cool, dry place (charge monthly).
  5. Store in a dry, covered location; block up tires to reduce flat spots.

CAUTION! Do not store with gasoline in carburetor without stabilizer; it can cause gumming.
