Engine Care

Proper engine maintenance is critical for reliable starts and power.

  1. Oil Change: Run engine to warm oil, drain via plug, refill with SAE 10W-30.
  2. Air Filter: Replace paper element; clean foam pre-filter if equipped.
  3. Spark Plug: Clean and gap to 0.030 inches; replace annually.
  4. Fuel System: Use fuel stabilizer if storing over 30 days; replace fuel filter annually.
  5. Cooling Fins: Keep clean of grass and debris to prevent overheating.

WARNING! Never check or add oil while engine is running. Allow to cool completely.

Cutting Deck Adjustment

Proper deck leveling ensures an even cut.

  1. Park on level surface, set cutting height to middle position.
  2. Measure blade tip height at all four corners of deck.
  3. Adjust lift links to level deck front-to-back and side-to-side.
  4. Check anti-scalp rollers; adjust to just clear ground at highest cutting setting.
  5. Sharpen blades regularly; balance after sharpening.

Tip: Deck should be 1/4-inch lower in front than back for best discharge.

Storage & Winterization

Prepare mower for off-season storage to prevent damage.

  1. Clean thoroughly: Remove grass from deck, engine, and chassis.
  2. Fuel: Add stabilizer, run engine 5 minutes, then either drain tank or fill completely.
  3. Oil: Change oil and filter.
  4. Battery: Disconnect, clean terminals, store in cool dry place; charge monthly.
  5. Store: In dry, covered location; block up deck to relieve tire pressure.

CAUTION! Never store with fuel in carburetor without stabilizer; it will gum up.
