Safety Information

Read all instructions before operating. Always follow safety guidelines.

  1. Clear mowing area of debris, toys, and obstacles before starting.
  2. Never allow children or pets in area while mowing.
  3. Always wear sturdy footwear, eye protection, and hearing protection.
  4. Do not mow on slopes greater than 15 degrees; mow across slopes, not up and down.
  5. Disengage PTO and set parking brake before dismounting.

DANGER! Keep hands and feet away from rotating blades and moving parts. Never operate without discharge chute or grass deflector in place.

Assembly & Setup

Uncrate and inspect all parts. Assembly requires basic tools.

  1. Install steering wheel: Align splines and secure with provided nut.
  2. Attach seat: Mount to frame using four bolts and washers.
  3. Connect battery: Attach red (+) cable first, then black (-) cable.
  4. Check tire pressure: Inflate all tires to 12 PSI (front) and 10 PSI (rear).
  5. Add engine oil and fuel: Use SAE 10W-30 oil (check dipstick) and unleaded gasoline.

CAUTION! Use two people when lifting heavy components. Ensure all bolts are tightened to specified torque.

Controls & Operation

Familiarize yourself with all controls before starting engine.

Dashboard: Ignition key, PTO switch, Throttle/Choke, Headlight switch, Hour meter.

Operator Station: Hydrostatic drive pedal (forward/reverse), Brake pedal, Parking brake lever, Deck lift lever, Cruise control lever.

Starting Procedure:

  1. Set parking brake. Ensure PTO switch is OFF.
  2. Move throttle to CHOKE position (cold engine).
  3. Turn ignition key to START; release when engine starts.
  4. Adjust throttle to desired speed (FAST for mowing).
Stopping Procedure:
  1. Disengage PTO switch.
  2. Return drive pedal to NEUTRAL.
  3. Set parking brake.
  4. Turn ignition key to OFF.

Maintenance Schedule

Engine Care

Kohler Command PRO 26 HP engine maintenance.

  1. Oil Change: Run engine to warm oil. Drain via plug, replace filter, refill with 2 quarts SAE 10W-30.
  2. Air Filter: Replace paper element every 50 hours; clean pre-cleaner if equipped.
  3. Spark Plugs: Gap at 0.030 inches; replace every 100 hours or if fouled.
  4. Fuel System: Use fresh unleaded gasoline (87 octane minimum). Add fuel stabilizer for storage.
  5. Cooling System: Keep cooling fins and air intake screen clean of debris.

WARNING! Allow engine to cool before servicing. Do not smoke near fuel system.

Transmission & Drive System

Hydrostatic transmission requires periodic fluid checks.

  1. Check fluid level with dipstick (engine off, on level surface).
  2. Change fluid and filter every 200 hours using specified hydrostatic fluid.
  3. Inspect drive belt for wear/cracks; replace if damaged.
  4. Adjust brake pedal free travel to 1 inch if necessary.
  5. Lubricate pivot points for drive pedal and linkages.

Tip: Avoid sudden direction changes at high speed to prolong transmission life.

Cutting Deck Operation

54-inch fabricated deck with manual height adjustment.

  1. Engage PTO only at full throttle (engine running).
  2. Adjust cutting height via lever (positions 1-7, approx. 1.5 to 4.5 inches).
  3. Mow at steady pace; overlap passes for even cut.
  4. Disengage PTO before stopping engine or crossing drives/walks.
  5. Clean deck after each use to prevent grass buildup and corrosion.
  6. Sharpen blades every 25 hours; balance after sharpening.
  7. Check belt tension periodically; adjust idler pulley if belt slips.

WARNING! Always disengage PTO and wait for blades to stop before inspecting or servicing deck.

Storage & Winterization

Prepare tractor for extended storage (e.g., winter).

  1. Add fuel stabilizer to tank; run engine 5 minutes to circulate.
  2. Change engine oil and filter.
  3. Remove battery; store in cool, dry place on wood surface; charge monthly.
  4. Clean entire tractor, especially underside of deck.
  5. Lubricate all grease fittings.
  6. Store in dry, covered location; block up tires if storing on concrete.

CAUTION! Do not store with fuel in carburetor for more than 30 days without stabilizer.
